Best times to visit the Kruger

Best times to visit the Kruger

The KNP is an all-year-round holiday destination with many different reasons to visit during the different seasons; so, choosing exactly when to visit the park really depends on what you want to experience, what you hope to spot and what about nature you enjoy the most. And boy does it have a lot to offer!

Most visitors come for the wildlife and there’s no question that the dry autumn and winter seasons from May to October are considered the best times for game viewing as well as walking adventures. Vegetation is low at this time of year, making animals easier to spot and follow, with permanent water sources providing rewarding game viewing as many animals converge daily around these.

Mid-winter – June to August – is a very comfortable time of year to visit the Kruger as there are fewer mosquitoes, little, if any rain, and temperatures are pleasantly warm during the day and refreshingly cool at night.

The bone-dry, end-of-winter-come spring months of September and October often experience uncomfortably hot and humid conditions but concentrations of animals around water sources are at their highest – this period is often regarded as the best game-viewing time for a Kruger trip.

The summer rains arrive from November onwards, peak in January and February and end around April. The Kruger is then transformed into a beautiful, thriving green landscape and it makes for stunning photography. During the “green season”, game viewing is still good – with many young summer-born animals around, it’s a predator’s paradise – and this is also best time to visit the Kruger for bird watching!

So, to sum it up, the Kruger never disappoints no matter the season! And having four-star accommodation to accompany your adventure is always a good idea! Bushveld Terrace Hotel, being situated 200m from the Phalaborwa Gate of the KNP, is the ideal spot for all your Kruger adventures all year round!
