International Hyena Day – Celebrating Nature’s Unsung Hero at Bushveld Terrace
Every year on April 27th, we celebrate International Hyena Day—a day dedicated to one of Africa’s most misunderstood and undervalued predators. At Bushveld Terrace, located just meters from the Phalaborwa Gate of the world-renowned Kruger National Park, we have the privilege of being on the doorstep of hyena territory. This gives our guests the unique opportunity to observe these incredible creatures in their natural environment.
The Truth About Hyenas
Hyenas often get a bad rap—thanks in part to myths, legends, and popular media portrayals—but these animals are far more complex and fascinating than many give them credit for. While they may be known for their eerie laughs and scavenging habits, hyenas are highly intelligent, social, and crucial to the health of the ecosystem.
Nature’s Cleanup Crew
Spotted hyenas, the most common species in the Kruger area, play an essential role as nature’s cleanup crew. They consume carcasses that other predators leave behind, which helps prevent the spread of disease and keeps the bushveld clean. Their powerful jaws and acidic stomachs allow them to digest bone and other tough materials, recycling nutrients back into the environment.
Skilled Hunters and Strategic Thinkers
Despite their scavenger reputation, hyenas are efficient and strategic hunters, with a success rate that often rivals lions. Living in matriarchal clans, hyenas have a complex social structure and use vocalizations, body language, and even scent-marking to communicate with each other—traits that reflect their remarkable intelligence.
Why They Matter
Without hyenas, the balance of the ecosystem would be disrupted. They keep herbivore populations in check, reduce disease risks by cleaning up remains, and indirectly support vegetation health by controlling overgrazing. Their presence is a sign of a functioning, thriving ecosystem.
At Bushveld Terrace, our proximity to Kruger’s Phalaborwa Gate means you’re just moments away from potential hyena sightings—whether at a waterhole, on a game drive, or hearing their distinct calls at night. Our team is always on hand to help you learn more about these incredible animals and why they deserve our respect and protection.
