Kids in the Kruger
The Kruger is a fun place for the whole family to experience and enjoy. Here are just a few reasons why small children should also experience this wonderful destination…
- Taking little kids to the KNP is one of the most educationally rewarding and fun experiences they will ever have; memories will be made here!
- Experiencing the animals up close, in their natural habitat, is such a thrilling experience even for the little ones.
- Helping kids gain a better understanding of animal conservation by seeing these beautiful animals is so important.
But won’t young kids on a game drive be impossible?
Here are some things we have learnt to help prepare your kiddies for this adventure so that they are engaged, enjoy the experience, and don’t ruin it for the rest of the family!
Note, children under six are not allowed on the open game drive vehicles for safety reasons, but if you are planning to self-drive then you are good to go!
Prepare young minds and eyes to spot wild animals
Going to the KNP without preparing is like going to a rock concert without knowing any of the songs, the vibe is great, and people are excited, but if you can’t sing along, it is just not the same!
So, the best thing when heading into the Kruger with young kids, is to prep the kids on what they could see on a game drive.
There is this thing called the “reticular activating system” or RAS. You would have noticed before, for example, when you are pregnant- suddenly you see pregnant women everywhere.
How the reticular activating system works, is that once you have seen a shape or pattern (or a lion!) your conscious and subconscious mind is programmed to recognise this shape and to distinguish it from its environment faster and more easily. We simply call it, putting on your “bush eyes’!
So, start educating the kids by exposing them to books about wild animals, their behaviour, sounds and habitats, thereby prepping their young minds what to look out for.
If you are planning on adventuring to the KNP on your next holiday with the whole family, come and stay with us, we have a pool for kids to swim in, delicious food from our restaurant to enjoy in the comfort of your room, family friendly room options and so much more for whole fam-dam to enjoy!
