Capturing the wild: 10 tips for phone photography in the Kruger

Ever look back at your photos and videos on holiday and feel like they just didn’t quite capture your experience? We get it, and the truth is that no photograph is going to ever quite match up to the real life encounter with a lion or that majestic raptor swooping down to catch its prey, it’s an experience that cannot ever be explained or even captured. But we do, however, have some tips that will get you pretty close to the first-hand experience, or at least give your social media friends and followers a sense of FOMO!

Our top tips to elevate your phone photography skills during a Kruger game drive.

1.     Prep your gear: Ensure your phone is fully charged before leaving our hotel and consider taking a power bank for extended excursions.

2.     Understand your camera settings: Familiarize yourself with your phone’s camera settings. Learn how to adjust focus, exposure, and white balance. Being comfortable with these basic settings will significantly enhance the quality of your photos.

3.     Use burst mode for action shots: Wildlife can be unpredictable, so use your phone’s “burst mode” to capture a series of shots in quick succession. This increases the likelihood of getting the perfect action shot, such as a lion on the move or a bird in flight.

4.     Respect wildlife and keep a safe distance: Remember that your safety and the well-being of the animals are top priorities. Always maintain a safe distance, and never approach or disturb the wildlife for the sake of a photo.

5.     Optimize natural light: Lighting is key to stunning wildlife photography. The golden hours around sunrise and sunset provide soft, warm light that enhances the colours of the landscape and wildlife. Experiment with different angles to make the most of natural light.

6.     Focus on composition: Apply basic composition principles, such as the rule of thirds, to create visually appealing photos. Frame your subjects thoughtfully, considering the surrounding environment to tell a compelling story.

7.     Patience is a virtue: Instead of constantly snapping photos, take the time to observe animal behaviour. This allows you to anticipate movements and capture more authentic moments.

8.     Keep your phone stable: Use both hands to hold your phone steadily or invest in a small tripod or stabilizer. This minimizes camera shake, especially in low-light conditions or when using zoom, resulting in sharper images.

9.     Practice ethical photography: Be mindful of the environment and other visitors. Avoid disturbing the peace with loud noises or disruptive behaviour. Follow Park guidelines to ensure a positive experience for everyone.

10.  Have fun: Most importantly, don’t take your photos too seriously and enjoy playing with these tips while soaking up the nature around you.
