Meet the Kruger’s shyest forager: The aardvark

Most safari-goers are familiar with the majestic lions, elusive leopards, and towering elephants in the Kruger National Park. Yet, there’s a mysterious creature that often goes unnoticed beneath the moonlit sky, the aardvark. With its long ears, powerful claws, and sticky tongue, this nocturnal forager is one of the Park’s more elusive residents. Often referred to as the “Earth Pig” the aardvark is a rare sight, but for those fortunate enough to encounter it, the experience is nothing short of magical.

Foraging evenings
As the temperature drops, the aardvark emerges. Using its sharp claws, it digs into termite mounds, searching for its favourite snack. Its 30cm long sticky tongue makes quick work of capturing insects, especially termites in the wet season and ants in the dry season.

The aardvark forages in a zigzag pattern, covering impressive distances in search of food. It leaves behind markers from its groin glands, making it clear that this foraging ground is taken.

Sunrise hideaways
After a productive night, the aardvark retreats to its underground burrow at sunrise. These burrows are engineering marvels, reaching up to 6 meters deep with multiple entrances. Not only do they provide safety for the aardvark, but once abandoned, they’re later used by other animals like the aardwolf, a specialist termite eater.

Afternoon rejuvenation
During the heat of the day, the aardvark sleeps in its burrow, conserving energy for the night ahead. With its moisture-rich insect diet, it rarely needs water, making it perfectly adapted to Kruger’s environment.

From the mighty roar of lions to the quiet, nocturnal wanderings of the aardvark, each creature in the Kruger brings its own wonder to the wild. The aardvark’s role as the Park’s shy forager reminds us that even the smallest, most elusive animals contribute to the incredible balance of the bushveld.
