A safari is one of the most thrilling experiences, offering a chance to witness nature in its purest form. However, with this privilege comes significant responsibility. The delicate balance between humans and wildlife must be respected to ensure the safety of both visitors and animals, as well as the preservation of the environment. Whether you’re embarking on a guided or self-drive game drive, adhering to proper safari etiquette can enhance your experience and protects the precious ecosystem that is on display.
1. Park respectfully: When you spot wildlife, always pull your vehicle over to the side of the road. Keep in mind that other vehicles may need to pass or share the sighting with you. But most importantly, respect the animals’ space and observe without interfering with its natural activity.
2. Drive slowly: The roads through the Kruger have speed limits, driving slower it not only safer for the animals but it can increase your chances of spotting animals. Please remember that large animals are not the only creatures that may be on the roads, be mindful of smaller creatures too that are not as easy to spot.
3. Maintain a safe distance: Avoid getting too close to animals, as this cause them distress. Use binoculars for a better view which you can conveniently purchase at our onsite Curio Shop. Patience is key, quietly watching from a distance may encourage animals to come closer.
4. Turn off your engine and keep noise to a minimum: Switch off your engine when viewing wildlife. The noise from your vehicle can interfere with the natural sounds of the environment and disturb the animals. Loud voices can scare animals away, so whisper when discussing sightings with fellow passengers. This also allows you to be more present in the moment and notice more about the wildlife around you. The key to incredible sightings lies in being as undetected as possible by the animals.
5. Observe footprints, don’t leave your own: The animals are allowed to drop their waste wherever they please, but you are not. Make sure that you keep all rubbish in the car and dispose of it outside of the Park. It’s a good idea to ensure you pack a lunch that has minimal waste – like paper bags and sandwich wraps. Chat to us about our packed lunch options before embarking on a game drive or self-drive.
7. Avoid feeding animals: While in certain seasons, animals may look hungry, please understand that that these natural feeding cycles must be respected. Feeding wildlife disrupts their natural behaviour and can make them sick. Some animals may seem placid in nature but do not be misguided, they are all wild and feeding them is extremely dangerous. Stick to observing and photographing the animals in their natural state.
8. Stay inside your vehicle: Animals view vehicles as a single entity and leaving the vehicle could make you appear as a threat. For your safety and the animals’ comfort, always stay inside the vehicle unless you’re in designated areas.
By following these simple yet crucial guidelines, you’ll help preserve the natural beauty of the Kruger and contribute to a more a respectful and enriching safari experience for everyone. Happy safari-ing!
