Tips for international adventurers visiting the Kruger National Park
We consider SA to be one of the most wonderous places in the world, with our diverse landscapes and accessibility to animals it is truly something to behold. It is more magnificent in real life than you could ever imagine!
The Kruger National Park is no exception, chock full of animals, birds, insects, the Big 5, ‘shongololos’ (millipedes the size of your hand!), buck varieties, and so much more, this biosphere is an adventure like no other.
If you are visiting us from overseas, as an outsider, our rainbow nation and everything it has to offer is a magical destination! Kruger is an essential part of that magic!
Here are our tips for international travellers visiting the KNP…
1: Find a South African to talk to.
- Here are some solid conversation starters: Nelson Mandela, braai, biltong, chutney, rugby, or Charlize Theron. Once you have the conversation going, you’ll be able to get insider’s knowledge on all the best times, spots, animals, and things to see in the Kruger Park!

2: Decide on the time of year.
- June, July, August (winter season) offers incredible animal sightings as the vegetation is low.
- Mid-November – December is holiday time for us South African’s, so the Kruger books up fast, with a slight surge in pricing.
- January and February can be scorching hot, with lots of rain. But the bush is greener which makes for stunning photo opportunities…

3: Decide on a destination.
- Our hotel is situated at the Phalaborwa Gate of the KNP (literally 200m away to be exact). Making it the perfect destination to stay when visiting the Park.

4: Know the animals you are looking for.

6: Malaria pills or no malaria pills?
It’s important that you read the South African National Parks response to taking malaria pills in the park. Speak to your doctor about preventative measures you can take to prevent contracting malaria.
7: Follow the rules of the Park.
- If you are taking a self-drive through the Park, don’t speed or get out of your car. Some animals are dangerous, and this is their home, treat it with respect.
- We are serious about anti-poaching in SA and our laws are not to be taken lightly.
- Leave the Park when requested unless you are in a safari vehicle with a guide.
- No littering!
- Animals have the right of way in all situations!
- Always listen to your guide, they are the experts!
